Open Science for All!
APC Waiver Campaign for STAM and STAM Methods – Supported by NIMS and Empa

Amid rising concerns over the global increase in Article Processing Charges (APCs), the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), is pleased to launch a limited-time APC waiver campaign for the following international open access journals in materials science:
  • Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM)
  • Science and Technology of Advanced Materials: Methods (STAM Methods)
Under this initiative, authors whose articles meet specified conditions will be eligible for full APC waivers during the campaign period. Normally, the APCs are JPY 131,000 for STAM and JPY 87,300 for STAM Methods. With this waiver, eligible authors can publish open access completely free of charge.

Global issues such as climate change and infectious diseases call for the rapid and equitable dissemination of scientific knowledge. Open science is becoming increasingly vital, and this movement gained further momentum following the G7’s 2023 statement promoting the fair distribution of scientific outputs and international collaboration in open science.

STAM has long been at the forefront of open science. Co-supported by NIMS and Empa, it transitioned to a gold open access journal in 2008 and continues to share cutting-edge materials science research with the global community.

About the campaign

Following the campaign that ran until the end of FY2024, which was the 25th anniversary of the publication of STAM, we will continue to offer free APCs until the end of FY2025 for authors who agree to deposit both their accepted manuscript and associated data in the NIMS institutional repository (MDR). This initiative is also extended to STAM Methods, a sister journal launched in 2021 with a focus on data-driven research methods in materials science.

By promoting open access publication and data sharing, NIMS contributes to the advancement of open science and the global development of materials research.

About STAM and STAM Methods

Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM) is a leading international open access journal that covers a broad range of topics in materials science. Launched in 2000, STAM achieved an Impact Factor of 7.4 (2024), ranking among the top-tier (Q1) journals in both materials science and interdisciplinary categories, and is one of the highest-rated journals originating from Japan.
As of April 2025, the editorial board consists of 39 experts from 10 countries, including Editor-in-Chief Kazuhiro Hono, President of NIMS. STAM continues to provide a global platform for disseminating high-quality research in materials science.

Science and Technology of Advanced Materials: Methods (STAM Methods) is a sister journal launched in 2021, with a focus on methodologies, including data-driven approaches in materials research. The journal is scheduled to receive its first Impact Factor later this year.
