For Businesses Considering Collaboration or Use of Our Research Results

“The true value of materials is in their use”

“The true value of materials is in their use”

It is one of NIMS’s operating principles that the true value of materials is in their use. We work actively to build bridges between the innovative fundamental research that we do at NIMS and the industrial sector. To this end, we offer industry a range of ways to collaborate with us, including collaborative research, technology sharing, lending of research materials for evaluation, licensing of patents and know-how, and use of our facilities.

Industrial collaboration guidelines

Although in principle NIMS aims to collaborate on research without distinguishing between Japanese and non-Japanese companies, we are a public institution established to enhance materials science and technology within Japan. For this reason, the following guidelines have been put in place for collaboration with non-Japanese companies:

  • In principle, we will collaborate with companies that have business operations (sales, employment, etc.) in Japan and contribute by paying taxes in Japan.
  • In principle, collaborations are aimed at promoting the dissemination and utilization of research results for the development of Japan's economy and industry.

Forms of industrial collaboration

NIMS offers various forms of industrial collaboration, including collaborative research, technology sharing, lending of research materials for evaluation, and use of our facilities. We will also listen to requests for licensing NIMS-held patents and know-how, and propose appropriate methods of sharing.
