Lights, roads, bridges, buildings, cars.... Materials and substances are the basis of all the essentials in our lives. As Japan’s national research and development institute dedicated to materials research, NIMS has created numerous materials that have changed the world. But requirements for materials change significantly with the times, so NIMS continues to carry out world-leading research aiming for greater achievements in materials development.

Donation Options

Recognition and Benefits

1. Name Announcement

● With your consent, your name will be listed on the NIMS website among the donors.

● Individuals who donate ¥100,000 or more, and corporations that donate ¥1,000,000 or more, will be recognized with a plaque displayed in the Central Building at the NIMS Sengen site. 

2. Original Thank-You Gifts

For  individual donors, the following gifts are available based on the donation amount per transaction: 

 10,000 JPY or more: NIMS Original Mug
 30,000 JPY or more: NIMS Original Mug + Tie or Scarf
100,000 JPY or more: NIMS Original Mug + Tie + Scarf

3. Tax Advantages

NIMS is classified as a “specified public interest promotion corporation” as stipulated by the relevant Japanese income and corporate tax ordinances. Donations to NIMS are eligible for tax benefits.

Individual Donations (Income Tax):
When individuals donate, they can deduct the total donation amount (up to 40% of their personal income), minus ¥2,000, from their taxable income.

Corporate Donations (Corporate Tax):
Corporations may include approved donations to NIMS as deductible expenses, provided that certain conditions are met.

Additionally, depending on your local government, donations may be eligible for deduction under Ibaraki Prefecture personal residence tax, as well as municipal tax, if certain conditions are met. For more information about procedures and details, please visit the Ibaraki Prefecture website.

4.Recommendation for the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon (Konju Hosho)

As a certified public interest corporation, NIMS may recommend individuals who have contributed ¥5,000,000 or more and organizations that have contributed ¥10,000,000 or more for the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon, which is awarded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Recommendations are made in accordance with the donor’s wishes and official requirements.

Donation Procedure

◆Credit Card Payment

If you wish to make a donation by credit card, please visit the URL provided on the NIMS donation page.

The payment page is only available in Japanese—please use translation services if needed.
※NIMS uses the “F-REGI Donation Payment” system.


Process (Approx. 10 minutes):

  1. Access the NIMS donation page and enter your email address.
  2. Agree to the handling of personal information via the link received by email
    and fill out the necessary details (contact information, donation details,etc.).

  3. Complete the payment via credit card.
    After NIMS confirms receipt, a donation receipt will be issued and sent to you.


◆Bank Transfer

For bank transfers, please follow these steps:

  1. Fill out and submit the “Donation/Research Grant Application Form”by email to the Public Relations Office.
  2. Upon acceptance, NIMS will send a “Notification of Acceptance/Deposit Request.”
    ※These documents are generally sent within 10 business days after the application is received.
  3. Transfer the donation to the designated bank account listed in the Deposit Request.
    Upon confirmation of receipt, the donation receipt will be issued and sent to you.

Notes Regarding Donations

  • Receipts will be issued and delivered after NIMS confirms receipt of funds.
    For credit card payments, receipts will be issued within three months of the donation acceptance date.
  • Donations to NIMS are intended to be used for operational expenses and are required to be unconditional (i.e., donors cannot request technical information or guidance in return).
  • Donations that disrupt NIMS’s purposes or operations, or deemed inappropriate in social convention, cannot be accepted.
  • If donation conditions are not met, or the donation is unrelated to NIMS’s operations, you will be notified of cancellation of the payment confirmation email within 14 business days.
