National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS, Tsukuba, Japan) is pleased to announce an international open call for the recruitment of extremely talented researchers who can promote top world-class research in Materials Science.

Abstract

National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS, Tsukuba, Japan) is pleased to announce an international open call for the recruitment of extremely talented researchers who can promote top world-class research in Materials Science. The successful candidate will be required to lead a new independent research group. In addition, several incentives will be made available, including the special allocation of a generous start-up fund of up to 100 million yen within the first year, to enable the candidate to start research at NIMS.

All research fields related to Materials Science, regardless of whether they are basic or applied, are eligible for application. For your reference, based on the newly formulated national strategy for science and technology, NIMS further strengthens the following research fields: (1) Quantum Materials, (2) AI Materials, (3) Biotechnology-related Materials, (4) Energy and Environmental Materials, (5) Materials Informatics, etc. Researchers who have top world-class achievements in any of these fields and are willing to further develop themselves at NIMS will be equally considered.

We are looking for researchers who can lead in the relevant areas to a top world-class level through strong leadership. Researchers are required to go beyond basic research and develop applications with a view on social implementation. We also welcome applicants from overseas and those with corporate experience.


Employee Incentives

  1. Up to 100 million yen will be allocated for the first year as start-up funds, according to the research plan at the time of appointment, and special budgetary incentives will be considered thereafter depending on the situation.
  2. Laboratory space will be allocated on a priority basis.
  3. To launch a new group, a quota will be given to recruit a permanent researcher from outside NIMS upon arrival or after arrival of the group leader. NIMS permanent researchers can also join your group.
  4. Graduate students can be admitted as faculty members* of the NIMS Joint Graduate School Program. (*Interview, selection, and screening will be required.)
  5. A salary will be determined at the discretion of the President depending on performance, experience, etc. in accordance with the Salary Regulations for Permanent Employees.
  6. No term of office. The retirement age for national government employees is followed. “Senior Scientists with Special Missions*” and “Fellows*” can maintain their research groups until the age of 65 and 70, respectively. (*Additional screening will be required.)
NIMS expects successful candidates to develop high-level innovative research on materials and devices, based on creative and original ideas within the well-organized research environment at NIMS, which includes excellent human resources, equipment and facilities, and support systems. In addition, NIMS expects successful candidates to form world-leading research groups with strong management skills.
