The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) announces the opening of the fiscal year 2023 call for proposals for Specific Theme (2) "Theme Mentoring" under Subtheme C "Creation of a Materials Unicorn Reserve," part of the 3rd phase of the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) "Building an Ecosystem for Material s Commercialization Innovation and Cultivation".

Call for proposals period

From August 29, 2023 (Tuesday) until noon on October 6, 2023 (Friday) (strict deadline).

Size and number of expected grants for contracted research

For each research and development topic, the commissioned research budget (including indirect costs) is expected to be around 5 million yen, with approximately 10 projects expected to be selected.

Research and development period

From the contract date until March 31, 2024.

Kiba Dojo (Coaching)

Applicants planning to submit proposals can receive coaching on their planned content from the Program Director (PD).

Implementation Details



  • Application Period: September 19 (Tue) to October 5 (Thu), 2023.
  • Implementation Period: September 19 (Tue) to October 6 (Fri), 2023.
  •  

  • Note: Coaching may not be feasible if scheduling cannot be accommodated due to a large number of applicants.
  • Method: Applicants can receive one session of coaching (45 minutes), conducted online.
  • Content: Presentation by the proposer, coaching, discussion.
  • Additional Information: The PD will not be involved in any part of the selection process for this call. Receiving coaching is not mandatory for submitting a proposal.

  • How to derive business scenarios from macro trends
  • Planning business and development strategies based on these insights
