Work Description
This position is offered within the GteX project, which promotes digital transformation (DX) in materials research.
The successful candidate will work primarily on the development of battery-related materials by utilizing experimental and computational data shared through participating projects. Using data-driven approaches, the research will focus on proposing strategies for optimizing materials and processes, and on establishing design guidelines.

The researcher will collaborate closely with experts in data platforms as well as experimental and analytical teams within and outside NIMS. A well-equipped computational environment is available to support data-driven research. The candidate is expected to contribute to the establishment of new methodologies for materials development through the integration of materials science and data science.
Scope of Work Description Change Duties are subject to change within the scope of the Employee’s position.
Qualification
  1. Ph.D. degree (or expected to obtain one soon) in a relevant field such as materials science, applied physics, chemistry, or information science
  2. Research experience related to battery materials is desirable
  3. Experience in data science, machine learning, or numerical analysis is desirable
  4. Basic knowledge of materials development, process design, or computational simulation is desirable
  5. Ability to communicate and write scientific papers in English
Starting Date February 1st 2026 or after (negotiable)
Term From the date of hire until January 31, 2027
Contract Renewal Criteria / Maximum Employment Period Renewal of the contract will be determined based on work performance, work attitude, progress of the work engaged in, workload at the end of the contract period, budget situation, and other factors. The maximum employment period shall not exceed five (5) years. This may be subject to change because of amendments to the Working Regulations.
Work Place National Institute for Materials Science, Namiki-Site (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki)
Scope of Work Location Changes The scope of the change of place of work shall be limited to each of the Employer’s site, as well as other locations separately approved by the Employer.
Work Hours 7 hours 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week
*Deemed working hours when the discretionary labor system is applied are 8 hours and 15 minutes per day.
Holiday Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, New Year Holidays, annual paid leave and other holidays as stipulated in the Working Regulations.
Salary / Supply
344,860 yen ~ 446,210 Details are subject to NIMS regulations.
Commuting allowance and national insurance will also be covered.
Trial Period Two months from the start date of employment
Insurance Health insurance (MEXT Mutual Aid Association), Welfare Pension Insurance, Employment Insurance and Worker’s Accident Compensation Insurance. You will be automatically enrolled in these insurances when working conditions meet the requirements.
