Projects selected for Subtheme C "Creation of a Materials Unicorn Reserve" for Fiscal Year 2023

The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), as the research promotion agency for the third phase of the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) project "Building an Ecosystem for Materials Commercialization Innovation and Development," has selected projects for the individual theme (1) "Support for Creation of a Materials Unicorn Reserve" under Subtheme C "Creation of a Materials Unicorn Reserve" for the fiscal year 2023.

Overview:

NIMS is the research promotion agency for the SIP's third phase project "Building an Ecosystem for Materials Commercialization Innovation and Development" and has selected projects for the individual theme (1) "Support for Creation of a Materials Unicorn Reserve" under Subtheme C "Creation of a Materials Unicorn Reserve" for fiscal year 2023.

This task focuses on supporting established or newly founded startups involved in academic technologies that aim to solve bottleneck issues in markets that the materials industry should target in the next 20-30 years, according to macro trends and societal challenges. The support period of three years will be dedicated to research and development to elevate them to Stage 2 equivalent.

The call for proposals for the individual theme (1) "Support for Creation of a Materials Unicorn Reserve" under Subtheme C "Creation of a Materials Unicorn Reserve" was open from May 1 (Monday) to June 16 (Friday), 2023. We received a total of 13 applications from universities, national research and development corporations, and private industry (universities: 6, national research: 3, private industry: 4). After evaluations by a committee comprised of external experts, we decided to select a total of three projects (university: 1, national research: 1, private industry: 1).
