It is one of NIMS’s operating principles that the true value of materials is in their use. We work actively to build bridges between the innovative fundamental research that we do at NIMS and the industrial sector. To this end, we offer industry a range of ways to collaborate with us, including collaborative research, technology sharing, lending of research materials for evaluation, licensing of patents and know-how, and use of our facilities.

We promote exchanges with highly skilled researchers and promising young researchers and students from universities and public research institutions both domestically and internationally. To further enhance the academic standing of NIMS and contribute to the further development of Japan's materials research and industry, we facilitate agreement-based research exchanges and have established programs for accepting students.

Discover NIMS research

As Japan’s only public institution specialized in materials science research, NIMS is expected to follow the basic science and technology policy set out by the government and the five-year medium-term plan based on it. This is part of NIMS’s contribution to the advancement of materials science research and technology. The government determines basic policy and the medium-term plan according to the needs of society, and in recent years there has been a particular emphasis on solving global issues related to the environment, energy, and resources through materials science research. The range of materials science work that NIMS pursues includes research that responds to these societal needs.
