On June 10th, 2024, NIMS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for research collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), USA. It is expected that the research collaboration will be stimulated and strengthened through this MOU.

With regard to this event, Dr. Kazuhiro Hono, who is the President of NIMS, said "I'm pleased with the conclusion of this MOU. We look forward to the further development of research collaboration in advanced materials and manufacturing through this MOU."

“This agreement is an important step forward in advanced materials science research,” said Yutai Kato, Director of the Materials Science and Technology Division at ORNL who is the technical contact for the collaborative research. “We are excited about the opportunity for future collaborations with NIMS scientists. We look forward to a future of increased interaction where we can, together, solve some of the world’s biggest scientific problems in materials and manufacturing science.”

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a top-level national laboratory which is sponsored by the United States Department of Energy and is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The laboratory is administrated by UT-Battelle, a limited liability partnership (LLP) between the University of Tennessee (UT) and the Battelle Memorial Institute, and conducts a wide range of research activities from fundamental research to applied research and development.

NIMS and ORNL have been deepening research exchanges with each other, such as NIMS invited Prof. Sudarsanam Suresh Babu, Governor’s Chair of Advanced Manufacturing, UT/ORNL to ask his research presentation at the NIMS Award Symposium 2023 at Tsukuba International Congress Center which was held in 2023. In addition, the University of Tennessee and NIMS have concluded International Cooperative Graduate Program and NIMS has actively accepted PhD students from the university since 2019.
