About the Engineer Position:

At NIMS, Japan's only national research and development agency specializing in materials, engineers are crucial in supporting cutting-edge material research through foundational technology development, advanced equipment development, new materials development, research support including analysis and evaluation, and building research and development environments through the promotion of digital transformation.

Engineers are vital for smoothly advancing research and achieving many outstanding research results. Currently, about 70 engineers with various specializations are active at NIMS.

Engineering Roles Across Three Technical Areas:

NIMS is looking for talented individuals in three technical areas: Materials Evaluation, Materials Creation, and IT & Information.

◆ Materials Evaluation Area

Supports cutting-edge materials research through the development of foundational technologies, advanced equipment development, and research support including analysis and evaluation. Aims to specialize in the evaluation, analysis, and interpretation of substances and materials from multiple perspectives.

  • Analysis and evaluation of substances through electron and X-ray excitation
  • Materials property evaluation and analysis under strong magnetic fields and ultra-low temperatures
  • Chemical analysis through mass spectrometry and spectral analysis
  • Evaluation and analysis for material reliability assurance
  • Related sample preparation techniques

◆ Materials Creation Area

Supports cutting-edge materials research and new materials development, including new semiconductor device development, through foundational technology development. Specializes in either microfabrication centered around semiconductor processes or the creation and macro-material processing of metal materials.

  • Semiconductor process technologies and related evaluation and analysis
  • Creation and processing of new materials for manufacturing
  • Maintenance and management of related operational equipment and technical support

◆IT & Information

Promotes digital transformation to build the best research environment for materials research. In a workplace culture that welcomes innovative proposals and actively incorporates new technologies, members participate in various ICT projects as core members, broadening their horizons and honing their technical skills.

  • Design, development, and construction of ICT systems and data/computing infrastructure supporting various tasks at NIMS
  • Operation and provision of services using constructed systems (including security measures)
  • Planning of such ICT systems and services

Qualifications:

  • Born on or after April 2, 1994. (To facilitate career development through long-term employment, there is an upper age limit.)
  • Graduates or expected graduates from technical colleges or higher educational institutions in science and engineering.
  • (For the IT & Information area, additional basic knowledge in programming, databases, large-scale computation, networking, security, and similar fields, is required.)
  • New graduates and those with some relevant recent experience in academia or industry, including postdoctoral researchers, engineers, and technicians, are welcome to apply.

Employment Conditions & Benefits:

Employment

Permanent staff (full-time) with no fixed term. Mandatory retirement at age 65.
※Following national public service guidelines, the mandatory retirement age will incrementally increase by one year every two years from April 2023, reaching 65 by April 2031.
(Those born after April 2, 1967, will have a mandatory retirement age of 65.)

Salary & Benefits

Determined based on experience. Annual salary increase (July), bonuses twice a year (June, December)
Allowances: Dependent allowance, commuting allowance, housing allowance, etc. Commuting allowance provided.
Various insurance policies: Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mutual Aid Association (pension, health insurance), workers' compensation insurance, employment insurance
Fixed overtime pay available (refer to Article 17-2, Paragraph 8 of the Fixed-term Staff Salary Regulations)
Probationary period applicable (refer to Article 37, Paragraphs 2 to 4 of the Fixed-term Staff Employment Regulations)

Work Location

Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture

Working Hours

Standard work hours (8:30-17:15 = 7 hours 45 minutes) or flexible time system available.
Discretionary labor system for professional work may be applicable.
In such cases, the deemed working hours are 8 hours 15 minutes per day
Break time: 12:00-13:00 (in principle)
Remote work system available

Balance

Systems for maternity leave, parental leave, reduced working hours for childcare, caregiving leave, etc., are in place.
A system is available to support engineers who engaged in childcare or caregiving and have been employed at least one year.
