We are inviting applications for Special Research Fellows (leaders responsible for spearheading research and development) to participate in a new large-scale project launched through an All-Japan collaboration among industry, academia, and government.

Work Description
Lead the development of facilities for evaluating and calibrating gas sensors.
  • Collaborate with external partner organizations and proactively drive research and development of the facilities.
  • Design, develop, and operate evaluation and calibration facilities.
  • Coordinate the facilities within NIMS and liaise with relevant departments inside NIMS.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualification
  • Candidates with experimental experience in the natural sciences (e.g., analytical chemistry, materials engineering, reaction chemistry, electrochemistry, electronic engineering, biology, etc.).
  • Experience in the development and operation of evaluation devices and systems.
  • Ability to cooperate in maintaining rules and security of the institute’s computer systems.
  • Proactive in introducing new technologies and methods; specific achievements are highly desirable.
  • Enthusiastic, positive, and cooperative attitude toward work.
  • Experience with analytical instruments (e.g., TOF-MS, GC-MS, IR) is an advantage.
  • Programming skills are an advantage.
  • Knowledge of data science is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of diverse gas and olfactory sensors (semiconductor, electrochemical, MEMS, conductive type, optical, acoustic, cellular, etc.) and practical experience in system development are an advantage.
※ Applicants who are able to communicate in Japanese will be given priority in hiring.
Starting Date As early as possible from April 2026 onward (negotiable).
Term 1 year (possibly renewable with annual evaluation).
Contract Renewal Criteria / Maximum Employment Period ・Renewal of the contract will be determined based on work performance, attitude, progress of assigned tasks, workload at the time of contract expiration, budgetary conditions, and other relevant factors.
・The maximum employment period is limited to five years. (However, this maximum period may be subject to change in the event of revisions to employment regulations, etc.).
Work Place National Institute for Materials Science, Namiki-Site (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki)
Scope of Work Location Changes The scope of the change of place of work shall be limited to each of the Employer’s site, as well as other locations separately approved by the Employer.
Work Hours 7 hours 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
Deemed working hours when the discretionary labor system is applied are 8 hours and 15 minutes per day.
Holiday Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, New Year Holidays, annual paid leave and other holidays as stipulated in the Working Regulations.
Salary / Supply
  • Salary will be determined in accordance with the NIMS Fixed-term Employee Salary Regulations, taking into account experience and ability.
  • Monthly salary of 450,000 JPY or more, depending on experience and ability (including allowances, no bonus).
  • Includes fixed overtime allowance.
  • Commuting allowance provided (for distances of 2 km or more from home), subject to an upper limit.
Trial Period Two months from the start date of employment
Insurance Health insurance (MEXT Mutual Aid Association), Welfare Pension Insurance, Employment Insurance and Worker’s Accident Compensation Insurance. You will be automatically enrolled in these insurances when working conditions meet the requirements.
