WMRIF
- World Materials Research Institute Forum -

International organization for material science based on a global network of collaborative research

2021.04.21 Update

In June 2005, the first president's meeting of the global material research institutes was held at NIMS with the participation of presidents from 15 material research institutes from 8 countries. In this meeting, establishment of the World Materials Research Institute Forum (WMRIF) was declared. WMRIF is an organization to develop a worldwide network of material research institutes and to support innovations in the field of material research through mutual information exchanges and shared use of research facilities. Further, it serves as a forum for lively discussions on global strategies related to material science in the future.

WMRIF History

In the 2nd WMRIF presidents' meeting held in June 2007 in Berlin, Germany, former NIMS president Prof. Kishi, now NIMS advisor, was appointed as the first president of the organization. Under his initiative, seven working groups were organized and it was decided that these groups should play the main role in looking for solutions to challenges on materials science and to further promote collaboration.
Prof. Kishi was appointed as Honorary President in the general assembly held in Shenyang, 2011. Now, NIMS is a member of Presidential Boad of WMRIF. Currently, 50 research institutes from 21 countries are the participants of WMRIF. WMIRIF is growing into a potent organization with an influence in developing international strategies in the field of material study.

WMRIF International Workshop for Young Scientists

WMRIF has also held the international workshop targeting young scientists every other year.
The 6th international workshop was held in November 2016, Tsukuba Japan hosted by NIMS.
The theme of the WS is "Structual Materials for Innovation and Integrated Computational Materials Engineering for their Developments".

Challenges for WMIRF

To promoting material strategies to address environmental and energy issues, WMRIF has determined the following items as its main emphases. WMIRF is committed to accelerating the establishment of a structure to achieve these objectives based on global networking.

  • Creation of a research resources map for collaborations
  • Joint creation of a technology outlook
  • Education and training for young scientists
  • Shared use of databases
  • Collaboration in research
