National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS)

The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) released five FY2018 structural materials data sheets on March 31, 2019. This series of data sheets has been used by industry as a fundamental source of data in determining appropriate design stress and selecting proper materials when designing machines and structures of adequate strength.

Abstract

(1) Photographs of microstructure of heat-resistant steel creep test material for thermal power plant

NIMS CREEP DATA SHEET No.M-12
MICROGRAPHS AND MICROSTRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CREPT SPECIMENS OF 25Cr-20Ni-Nb-N STAINLESS STEEL TUBE FOR POWER BOILERS (KA-SUS 310J1 TB)

(2) Fatigue data sheets on aluminum alloys

NIMS FATIGUE DATA SHEET No.126
DATA SHEET ON GIGA-CYCLE FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF
A7075-T6 (Al-5.6Zn-2.5Mg-1.6Cu) ALUMINIUM ALLOY AT HIGH STRESS RATIOS

(3) Atlas of cross-sectional image of rust formed on samples exposed to outdoors

NIMS CORROSION DATA SHEET No.CoF-3
CROSS-SECTION OF RUST ON Fe-Cr AND Fe-Ni BINARY ALLOYS AFTER EXPOSURE TEST FOR 1.0 YEARS

(4) Data sheet on atmospheric corrosion properties of carbon steels

NIMS CORROSION DATA SHEET No.6
- EFFECT OF ATMOSPHERIC ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS –

(5) Space use materials strength data sheet on Alloy 718 base metal and welded joint

NIMS SPACE USE MATERIALS STRENGTH DATA SHEET No. 28
DATA SHEET ON LOW-CYCLE FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF ALLOY 718 (1338 K ST) BASE METAL AND WELDED JOINTS

NIMS structural materials data sheets contain various types of data (e.g., creep, fatigue, corrosion and cryogenic fatigue properties) collected systematically and without bias using standardized testing methods. For more than 30 years, these data sheets have provided industry with fundamental data for determining appropriate design stress and selecting proper materials to enable the design of machines and structures of adequate strength. They have also been used as reference materials to estimate the degree of deterioration and the remaining life of various materials in use. We hope that the new data sheets will continue to serve widely as an industrial standard in strength design and materials selection for various types of products.
