Both Japan and the United States are leading countries in basic science research on next-generation rechargeable batteries, and national projects have been continuously conducted in both countries. Most recently, JCESR, supported by DOE, and ALCA-SPRING, supported by JST/MEXT, have been underway since 2012 and 2013, respectively, and both are in their final stages.
