Work Description
"Elucidation and Modeling of Damage Mechanisms in Ni-base Superalloys for Aero-engines"

Fundamental research on high-temperature mechanical properties, environmental resistance, and the combined characteristics of material strength and environmental resistance of Ni-base superalloys. The successful candidate will combine heat treatment, mechanical testing, oxidation testing, and microstructural analysis using microscopy to construct life prediction models for practical application of high-temperature alloys. 
Scope of Work Description Change Duties are subject to change within the scope of the Employee’s position.
Qualification
  1. Applicants must hold (or expect to receive) a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. 
  2. Expertise and experience in any of the following: Physical metallurgy,  strength and fracture of materials, or materials process engineering. 
  3. Practical experience in microstructural/dislocation analysis using FIB, EBSD, TEM, etc., or mechanical testing (especially high-temperature testing and/or DIC) is highly desirable. 
  4. We welcome proactive and open-minded researchers who can actively discuss and collaborate with researchers and engineers from domestic and international companies, universities, and research institutions. 
  5. Proficiency in English for writing academic papers and conducting smooth research discussions. 
  6. Proficiency in Japanese for document preparation is desirable, or a strong willingness to learn Japanese is welcome.
Starting Date June 1, 2026, or later (negotiable)
Term Initially one year (renewable with annual evaluation)
Contract Renewal Criteria / Maximum Employment Period Renewal of the contract will be determined based on work performance, work attitude, progress of the work engaged in, workload at the end of the contract period, budget situation, and other factors. The maximum employment period shall not exceed five (5) years. This may be subject to change because of amendments to the Working Regulations.
Work Place National Institute for Materials Science, Sengen-Site (1-2-1 Sengen, Tsukuba, Ibaraki)
Scope of Work Location Changes The scope of the change of place of work shall be limited to each of the Employer’s site, as well as other locations separately approved by the Employer.
Work Hours 7 hours 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week
Deemed working hours when the discretionary labor system is applied are 8 hours and 15 minutes per day.
Holiday Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, New Year Holidays, annual paid leave and other holidays as stipulated in the Working Regulations.
Salary / Supply
Monthly salary: 345,425 yen – 448,816 yen
  • Salary will be determined based on experience and skills in accordance with NIMS Salary Regulations for Fixed-Term Employees.
  • Commutation allowance: Provided (for distances of 2 km or more), subject to a maximum limit.
  • Deemed overtime allowance included in monthly salary (Article 13-2 of the Salary Regulations for Fixed Term Employees).
*No pay raises; however, salary may be revised at the time of contract renewal.
Trial Period Two months from the start date of employment
Insurance Health insurance (MEXT Mutual Aid Association), Welfare Pension Insurance, Employment Insurance and Worker’s Accident Compensation Insurance. You will be automatically enrolled in these insurances when working conditions meet the requirements.
