Special Researcher (Olfactory Sensors: General-Purpose Device)

We are inviting applications for Special Research Fellows (leaders responsible for spearheading research and development) to participate in a new large-scale project launched through an All-Japan collaboration among industry, academia, and government.

Work Description
 Providing leadership in the development of devices integrating gas and olfactory sensors.
  • Design and development of devices.
  • Proactive leadership in device development in collaboration with external partner organizations.
  • Coordination of the relevant device development within NIMS.
  • Training and supervision of junior staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Scope of Work Description Change ・Duties are subject to change within the scope of the Employee’s position.
・The details are subject to change in the event that the anticipated large-scale project is not funded.
Qualification
  • Experimental background in the natural sciences (e.g., analytical chemistry, materials science, reaction chemistry, electrochemistry, electronics, biology, etc.).
  • Possess knowledge of a wide range of gas and olfactory sensors (e.g., semiconductor, electrochemical, MEMS, conductive, optical, acoustic, cellular, etc.) as well as practical experience in device and system development.
  • Able to adhere to NIMS computer system regulations and contribute to maintaining security.
  • Proactive in adopting new technologies and methodologies; demonstrated achievements in this area are preferred.
  • Applicants with knowledge of data science will be given preference.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for work, a positive attitude, and excellent ability to collaborate with others.
※Preference will be given to candidates with R&D or engineering experience in private industry; please include a summary of relevant experience in your CV, if applicable.
Starting Date As early as possible from January 2026 onward (negotiable)
Term 1 year (possibly renewable with annual evaluation)
Contract Renewal Criteria / Maximum Employment Period Renewal of the contract will be determined based on work performance, work attitude, progress of the work engaged in, workload at the end of the contract period, budget situation, and other factors. The maximum employment period shall not exceed five (5) years. This may be subject to change because of amendments to the Working Regulations.
Work Place National Institute for Materials Science, Namiki-Site (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki)
Scope of Work Location Changes The scope of the change of place of work shall be limited to each of the Employer’s site, as well as other locations separately approved by the Employer.
Work Hours 7 hours 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week
Deemed working hours when the discretionary labor system is applied are 8 hours and 15 minutes per day.
Holiday Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, New Year Holidays, annual paid leave and other holidays as stipulated in the Working Regulations.
Salary / Supply
  • In accordance with the NIMS Fixed-Term Staff Salary Regulations , the salary will be determined based on the applicant’s experience and qualifications.
  • The monthly salary will range from 500,000 yen to approximately 1,000,000 yen, depending on experience and competencies, inclusive of allowances.
  • Fixed overtime pay included in monthly salary(Article 10, item 3 of the Salary Regulations for Fixed Term Employees)。
  • A commuting allowance will be provided for employees living more than 2 km from their residence, subject to a maximum limit.
Trial Period Two months from the start date of employment
Insurance Health insurance (MEXT Mutual Aid Association), Welfare Pension Insurance, Employment Insurance and Worker’s Accident Compensation Insurance. You will be automatically enrolled in these insurances when working conditions meet the requirements.
