NIMS and JAXA Issue Data Sheets on Mechanical Properties of Space Use Materials No. 17 and No. 18

National Institute for Materials Science
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

NIMS, in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is engaged in activities to improve data on the mechanical properties of practical materials, aiming at improved reliability in Japan’s H-II A and H-II B rockets. As one result of these activities, NIMS and JAXA recently issued two Data Sheets on Strength of Space Use Materials.

Abstract

The National Institute for Materials Science (President: Sukekatsu Ushioda), in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (President: Keiji Tachikawa), is engaged in activities to improve data on the mechanical properties of practical materials, aiming at improved reliability in Japan's H-II A and H-II B rockets. As a result of these activities, NIMS and JAXA recently issued two Data Sheets on Mechanical Properties of Space Use Materials, "No. 17, Data Sheet on Fatigue Crack Propagation Characteristics of Aluminum Alloy A356-T6 Castings" and "No. 18 Data Sheet on Fatigue Crack Propagation Characteristics of Alloy 718 Castings."

This activity is being carried out as part of efforts by NIMS to improve the intellectual infrastructure under its 2nd Five-Year Plan (FY2006-FY2010) and by JAXA to maintain and develop main space transportation systems under its Second Stage Mid-Term Plan (FY2008-FY2012). To date, the two organizations have achieved a number of important results, such as elucidation of the mechanisms of fatigue in titanium alloys and nickel-base superalloys at cryogenic temperatures.

In the future, NIMS and JAXA plan to issue Data Sheets on copper alloy forging materials and Ni-base superalloy welding consumables which are used in rocket engines.
