The DAAD is operated by public funds from the Federal Republic of Germany and is responsible for promoting international exchange among universities. Its Tokyo office was launched in April 1978. In August 2022, Mr. Axel Karpensteinsh who visited NIMS this time was sworn in as the director of DAAD Tokyo office and develops activities to promote close collaboration with the universities and research institutions in Japan representing various fields of expertise. And DWIH Tokyo, which plays a role of a platform for the German universities, German research institutions, and research-based German companies, has been operating supported by the German Federal Foreign Ministry since its establishment in 2010, and DWIH has been coordinated by DAAD from 2017.

NIMS has accepted many internship students from overseas through the NIMS Internship Program. From FY2006 to FY2022, NIMS has accepted internship students from China (254), India (139), France (110), Taiwan (106), Korea (77), Canada (50), followed by the Federal Republic of Germany (40). Where the numbers in parentheses indicate the actual total number of accepted internship students from each country. Then, it is expected that the present visit of the director of DAAD Tokyo to NIMS will lead to an increase in the number of internship students from the Federal Republic of Germany.
