Academia Sinica ,Taiwan research delegation visits NIMS
2023.09.12 Update
On 7th August, a delegation from Academia Sinica (Taiwan) led by Dr. James C. Liao, the President of the Academia Sinica, visited NIMS and toured Namiki and Sengen sites.
The Academia Sinica is Taiwan's national academy of sciences and the leading research organization in Taiwan, consisting of 8 institutes with 3 centers in the division of mathematics and physical sciences, 5 institutes with 4 centers in the division of life sciences, and 11 institutes with one center in the division of humanities and social sciences. The Academia Sinica is a large research organization consisting of 948 research staffs, 729 post-doctoral researchers, 2,748 research assistant staffs, 2,027 postgraduate students and 1,176 administrative staffs. The aim of the present visit was to investigate the possibility of international collaboration between NIMS and Academia Sinica.
One of the current major research targets of the Academia Sinica is achievement of net zero (so-called ’carbon neutral’) up to 2050 and namely, zero total greenhouse gas or carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions minus absorption and removal within 27 years. Specific examples include the R&D of hydrogen production technology by methane pyrolysis, high-efficiency perovskite solar cells, and biomass carbon sinks (i.e. biomass whose CO2 absorption exceeds its CO2 emissions). Therefore, meeting for an exchange of ideas was held with stakeholders from the Research Center for Energy and Environmental Materials (GREEN). Also, they had a discussion with persons in charge of the International Center for Young Scientists (ICYS), the Public Relations Office and the External Collaboration Division in Sengen site.
In the near future, it is expected that the creation of a framework for international cooperation and promotion of joint research towards the achievement of carbon neutral through the exchange of young researchers and graduate students will be started.
