IISc is prestigious Indian university with a long history, founded in 1909. Within India, there is an evaluation method called NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) approved by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank Indian universities.

The NIRF ranks universities in 11 different fields (overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental and research).

IISc is the India's leading university both in its long history since its founding and in its achievements, ranking first in the university field from 2016 to 2023 and in the research field from 2021 to 2023.
Currently, this university has 4,500 enrolled students, 500 faculty and research staffs on roll and has a very high research output of 2,000 papers published annually.

SciVal analysis tool reports that IISc’s published papers on the quantum technologies, remote sensing, alloy materials, catalytic materials, organometallics and storage battery materials got high field-weighted citation impact 1.23~1.81 (incidentally, the global average for this analysis index is 1.0 ) and very high prominence percentile 96.656~98.729 (by the way, this index is a measure of research topic’s attention and momentum, with 100 being the highest value for objective evaluation.) between 2013 and 2022.

Their research topics have much in common with the materials research themes in which NIMS is strong asset, and it is expected that many new international joint research projects between IISc and NIMS will be initiated with the conclusion of the MoU.

In addition, IISc has been very active in student exchanges with universities outside of India, and we expect that the conclusion of International Cooperative Graduate Program between NIMS and IISc will further strengthen the tie of both institutions in the near future.
