Operando Nano X-ray CT Imaging

Using nano X-ray CT with a spatial resolution of 20 nm, we have established a measurement technique capable of three-dimensionally visualizing microstructural changes inside electrode active-material particles, as well as lithium-metal plating on the negative electrode. By quantitatively capturing void formation and crack initiation caused by phase transitions and volume changes during charge and discharge—together with the onset and propagation of lithium-metal plating—this technique helps elucidate the mechanisms of electrode degradation and reduced safety, and supports the establishment of design guidelines for batteries with high durability and high safety.
