Research and Development Theme4:All-solid-state batteries
All-solid-state batteries are attracting attention as a next-generation energy storage technology. They solve the safety issues of flammable organic electrolytes, while offering long cycle life and excellent charge/discharge performance. This is because solid electrolytes conduct only lithium ions, preventing the diffusion of anions and solvent molecules that cause side reactions, and avoiding the formation of concentration gradients.
Sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries have already demonstrated high performance, and their application in electric vehicles is approaching commercialization. To further accelerate widespread adoption and expand their use, our project focuses mainly on oxide-based all-solid-state batteries. By making use of process science developed through the MEXT Materealize Project, we are advancing research in three key areas: fundamental science of all-solid-state batteries, discovery of new solid electrolytes, and prototyping of all-solid-state batteries.
