– Engineering material properties by folding like origami! –
Takuya Iwasaki at ICYS-WPI-MANA, Satoshi Moriyama and Yutaka Wakayama at MANA have developed the ‘folded bilayer-bilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride superlattices’, in which bilayer graphene, two-dimensional material, is folded like origami (i.e. folded paper). This stacking structure shows novel electronic properties such as insulating states, which have not been observed in the original materials.
This study paves a way to engineer two-dimensional electronic systems by mechanical folding.
