NIMS designates Fellows in recognition of outstanding NIMS researchers as well as individuals from outside the organization for their exceptional knowledge, experience and research achievements in materials science. These Fellows play a key role in NIMS’ specialized fields of research by leading and advising other researchers, with the aim of promoting our research activities.

Takayoshi SASAKI


Doctor of Science. Completed the Master's Course in Dept. of Chemistry, the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo (1980). Joined the National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials as a Researcher. Appointed Director of Soft Chemistry Group in NIMS, Managing Director of the Nanoscale Materials Center, Coordinator of Nanomaterials Field of MANA, Director of MANA and Executive Vice Presindent (2022). Named NIMS Fellow in April 2009.

Naoto HIROSAKI


Doctor of Engineering. Completed master's course in Dept. of Industrial Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University (1980). Joined Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. Senior Researcher at NIRIM (current NIMS) of the Science and Technology Agency. Group Leader at the Nitride Particle Group of NIMS. Unit Director at the Sialon Unit of NIMS (2011). Named NIMS Fellow in April 2015.

Takashi TANIGUCHI


Doctor of Engineering. Completed doctoral course in Dept. of Science and Engineering, Graduate School, Tokyo Institute of Technology (1987). Joined National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials (NIRIM) as Researcher, Senior Researcher, Group Leader of the High Pressure Group of NIMS. Named NIMS Fellow in April 2018.

Kazuhiro HONO


Ph.D. in Metals Science and Engineering, Penn State (1988). After working as research associates at Carnegie Mellon and Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, joined National Institute for Materials Science (currently NIMS) as a senior researcher in 1995. Then, Director of Nanostructure Group, NIMS fellow in 2004, Director of Research Center for Magnetic and Spintronic Materials, Executive Vice President and Presindent in 2022. Reappointed as Fellow in 2019.

Kaneaki TSUZAKI


Doctor of Engineering. Completed doctoral course in Materials Science and Technology, Kyoto University (1983). Associate Professor at Kyoto University. Joined the National Research Institute for Metals as a Unit Director (1997). Appointed Managing Director of the Structural Metals Center in NIMS. Moved to Kyushu University as a Professor (2013), and back to NIMS (2020). Named NIMS Fellow in April 2021.

Kazunori TAKADA


Doctor of Engineering (from Osaka City University, 1991). After working at Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., joined NIRIM (current NIMS) of the Science and Technology Agency as Special Researcher. MANA Principal Investigator, NIMS. Unit Director of Battery Materials Unit, NIMS. Director, Center for Green Research on Energy and Environmental Materials (2018). Named NIMS Fellow in April 2023.

Kohzo ITO


Doctor of Engineering. Completed doctoral course in Applied Physics, The University of Tokyo (1986). After working as a researcher at Research Institute for Polymers and Textiles, Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, joined Dept. of Applied Physics, The University of Tokyo. Professor, Dept. of Advanced Materials Science, The University of Tokyo in 2003. Named NIMS Fellow in June 2023.

Doctor of engineering. Completed doctoral course, Graduate School of Engineering, Tokyo Metropolitan University(1982). Assistant / Associate Professor at Nagoya Institute of Technology, Visiting Associate professor at Vanderbilt University, Associate Professor at National Institutes of Natural Sciences(Institute for Molecular Science), Associate Professor / Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology. Founding Director of Materials Research Center for Element Strategy at Tokyo Institute of Technology(2012). Won the Japan Prize in 2016. Named NIMS Distinguished Fellow and became a team leader at Electro-Active Materials team in MANA in April 2020.

Toyonobu YOSHIDA

Received doctoral degree in metallurgy and materials science from The University of Tokyo (1977). Appointed as Research Associate (1977), Lecturer (1982), Associate Professor (1984), and promoted to full Professor (1989) at the Department of metallurgy and materials science, Faculty of Engineering, The University of Tokyo. He became a NIMS Fellow in January 2012, and Named Emeritus fellow in April 2019.

Eiji MUROMACHI

Joined the National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials as a Researcher.
