National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS)

The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) released five FY2019 structural materials data sheets on March 31, 2021. This series of data sheets has been used by industry as a fundamental source of data in determining appropriate design stress and selecting proper materials when designing machines and structures of adequate strength.

Abstract

(1) Revised creep data sheets on heat-resistant steels for thermal power plants and photographs of microstructure

NIMS CREEP DATA SHEET No. 52B
DATA SHEETS ON THE ELEVATED-TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES OF 12Cr-2W-0.4Mo-1Cu-Nb-V STAINLESS STEEL TUBE FOR POWER BOILERS (KA-SUS 410J3 DTB)

NIMS CREEP DATA SHEET No.M-13
MICROGRAPHS AND MICROSTRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CREPT SPECIMENS OF 0.2C SILICON-KILLED STEEL TUBES FOR BOILERS AND HEAT EXCHANGERS (STB 410)

(2) Fatigue data sheets on stainless steels and aluminum alloys

NIMS FATIGUE DATA SHEET No.129
DATA SHEET ON LOW- AND HIGH-CYCLE FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF SUS317L1 (25Cr-7Ni-4Mo) DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL

NIMS FATIGUE DATA SHEET No.130
DATA SHEET ON GIGA-CYCLE FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF A6061-T6 (Al-1.0Mg-0.6Si) ALUMINIUM ALLOY

(3) Atlas of cross-sectional image of rust formed on samples exposed to outdoors

NIMS CORROSION DATA SHEET No.CoF-5
ATLAS OF CROSS-SECTIONAL IMAGE OF RUST FORMED ON SAMPLES EXPOSED TO OUTDOORS CROSS-SECTION OF RUST ON Fe-Cr AND Fe-Ni BINARY ALLOYS AFTER EXPOSURE TEST FOR 2 YEARS

(4) Data sheet on strength of space related materials for cryogenic fatigue of titanium alloy (forged material)

NIMS SPACE USE MATERIALS STRENGTH DATA SHEET No. 30
DATA SHEET ON FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH PROPERTIES OF Ti-6Al-4V ELI ALLOY (φ300mm Forging) AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES

NIMS structural materials data sheets contain various types of data (e.g., creep, fatigue, corrosion and cryogenic fatigue properties) collected systematically and without bias using standardized testing methods. For more than 40 years, these data sheets have provided industry with fundamental data for determining appropriate design stress and selecting proper materials to enable the design of machines and structures of adequate strength. They have also been used as reference materials to estimate the degree of deterioration and the remaining life of various materials in use. We hope that the new data sheets will continue to serve widely as an industrial standard in strength design and materials selection for various types of products.
