Novel Approach to Designing Nanostructured Reduced Titanium Oxides for A Wide Range of Applications

-Toward artificial photosynthesis and alternative materials to precious metals -

15 Jul, 2011

Satoshi Tominaka, Yoshihiro Tsujimoto and their collaborators have successfully synthesized nanoparticles of a reduced titanium oxide (Ti2O3) by a low-temperature reduction of TiO2 nanoparticles. The nanomorphology is completely maintained during the reductive reaction despite of structure transformation from tetragonal to hexagonal system. Our research results will contribute to further development in photovoltaics and fuel cells, and will open a door for preparing high-quality and high-functional materials with other nanomorphology.
