Professor Atsuo Yamada, Research and Development Leader at the University of Tokyo—a participating institution of the Center for Advanced Battery Collaboration —received the 2026 EnSM Award from the international journal, Energy Storage Materials on June 9, 2026.

The EnSM Award is presented annually to a researcher who demonstrates remarkable innovation and has made significant international contributions in the field of energy storage materials and devices. Past recipients include global leaders in battery research, such as Dr. Akira Yoshino. This award recognizes Professor Yamada for his long-standing achievements in fundamental research and materials development, which have been highly acclaimed worldwide.

A commemorative lecture titled “Multifaceted Approach Toward Sustainable Batteries” was delivered by Professor Yamada at the 7th International Energy Storage Materials Conference, held in Dresden on September 21, 2026.

At the ABC Center, Professor Yamada is actively working on the development of rapid quantitative analysis methods for various factors affecting battery safety. He has successfully developed the protocol “Evaluation Method for Thermal Safety of Small Batteries,” which is now available for use. We strongly hope this protocol is utilized to develop and evaluate the safety of batteries.
