Applicants of the Master's program need to choose "Master' s Program in Engineering Sciences, Subprogram in Materials Science" or "Master's Program in Engineering Sciences, Subprogram in Applied Physics".
Please choose the subprogram corresponding to the professors assignment. It is highly recommended to contact with potential prospective supervising professor prior to submitting the application.

TOEFL iBT test and TOEFL iBT Home Edition for the entrance exam

If you plan to apply using TOEFL iBT test or TOEFL iBT Home Edition score reports, please read the important notice from the graduate school. Please arrange to send the score directly from ETS to the University of Tsukuba.

Application for NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship (April 2022 admission) is open.

* Application for NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship is different from that for Entrance Exam announced on this page. Applicants for NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship must apply for the Entrance Exam as well.

Application Guide

Master’s degrees can be obtained under supervision of University of Tsukuba - NIMS Joint Graduate School Program professors (i.e. NIMS researchers), by enrolling in the Materials Science and Engineering Course: Master’s Subprogram in Applied Physics and Master’s Subprogram in Materials Science.

Master’s applicant have to choose the program corresponding to the professors assignment. Please contact the faculty professor prior to the application and make sure that you apply for the appropriate Master’s program.

Application Submission

Submit the online application, then send the required documents to the university. A set of the application documents must be delivered to the following university office during the application period.

How to Apply

Apply for the Master’s Program

Applicants for the Master’s program is to have earned or to be expected to have a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent in science or engineering by the date of admission. The enrollment period is April and October.

Contact the professor

See “Faculty & Research” to find the matches between their research and your interested research field. Email the professor your CV with a cover letter expressing your interest in the research subject.

Prepare for the application documents

TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS score from the exam taken within 2 years is valid. The original certificate needs to be included in the application documents.

If you consider applying for the NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship, prepare the following documents as well. (note : the application closing date comes 1-2 months earlier than the university application period.)

  1. 1. Application form for the NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship
    Important note :
    In the application form, make sure to include the names and emai l address of at least 2 references. NIMS will directly contact the references regarding the applicant. The communication with the references is an important part of the assistantship selection, which is confidential and used solely for the purpose of assessing the applicant. The applicant must agree to waive the right of access.
  2. 2. Undergraduate academic transcripts (in PDF format)
  3. 3. PDF copy of the TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS score certificate. The score must be from the exam taken within 2 years.
  4. 4. CV (specified format)

Notes :

  1. * 1 Before you apply, you need to contact a prospective supervisor (a faculty member from whom you wish to receive academic instruction) in advance. (See the Faculty Members )
  2. * 2 Applicants have to choose one from the following :

    1) Submit the Examinee Score Record of TOEFL
    2) Submit the Official Score Certificate/ Report of TOEIC
    3) Submit the Test Report Form of IELTS (Academic Module)
    Applicants have to submit the Examinee Score Record of TOEFL, the Official Score Certificate/ Report of TOEIC, or Test Report Form of IELTS (Academic Module). TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS score certificate on and after 1st August 2019 is valid for the admission exam in August 2021 and February 2022. A copy of the original and a PDF copy downloaded from the Internet are NOT acceptable. There is no English test conducted by the university.
    If your score of TOEIC, TOEFL, or IELTS amount to more than the score below, it is considered to be equivalent to a perfect score of our English test.

  3. * 3 Specialized Subject
    You must answer mathematics question. Besides, answer three questions from mechanics, electromagnetics, quantum mechanics, optics, and semiconductor engineering. (Choosing mechanics or electromagnetics is necessary.)
  4. * 4 Specialized Subject
    Answer two questions from basic special subject, and one question from special subject. (three questions in total)

Enrollment

A list of successful applicants' number will be posted on the university website. A letter of acceptance will also be sent to successful applicants by registered mail. Later on, the enrollment procedure guidelines will be delivered to the successful applicants. As well as the enrollment to the university, registration at National Institute of Materials Sciences is required through your supervising professor.
