Applicants of the doctoral program need to choose "Doctoral Program in Engineering Sciences, Subprogram in Materials Science and Engineering”.
It is highly recommended to contact with potential prospective supervising professor prior to submitting the application.

If you plan to apply using TOEFL iBT test or TOEFL iBT Home Edition score reports, please read the important notice from the graduate school. Please arrange to send the score directly from ETS to the University of Tsukuba.

Application Submission

Submit the online application, then send the required documents to the university. A set of the application documents must be delivered to the following university office during the application period.

How to Apply

Apply for the Doctoral Program

Applicants for the Doctoral program is to have earned or to be expected to have a master's degree or an equivalent in science or engineering before the date of admission. The enrollment period is April and October.

Contact the professor

See "Faculty & Research” to find the matches between their research and your interested research field. Email the professor your CV with a cover letter expressing your interest in the research subject.

Prepare for the application documents

TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS score from the exam taken within 2 years is valid. The original certificate needs to be included in the application documents.

  1. 1. Application form for the NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship
    Important note :
    In the application form, make sure to include the names and emai l address of at least 2 references. NIMS will directly contact the references regarding the applicant. The communication with the references is an important part of the assistantship selection, which is confidential and used solely for the purpose of assessing the applicant. The applicant must agree to waive the right of access.
  2. 2. Academic transcripts of both undergraduate and graduate (in PDF format)
  3. 3. PDF copy of the TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS score certificate. The score must be from the exam taken within 2 years.
  4. 4. CV (download the format from here)

University application submission (usually a month earlier than the exam date)

Submit the online application, then send the following documents to the university. The documents must be delivered to the university during the application period.

Oral Examination
Presentation on the master's thesis or research achievements for 15 min, followed by an interview for 15 min. A projector is available for the presentation.

Note :

  1. 1 Before you apply, you need to contact a prospective supervisor (a faculty member from whom you wish to receive academic instruction) in advance. (See the Faculty Members)
  2. 2 There is no English examination.
  3. 3 Submit the original Official Score Certificate/Report of TOEIC, or the Examinee Score Record of TOEFL or Test Report Form of IELTS (Academic Module) along with your application forms. We take the higher score if you submit more than one English score certificate.
  4. 4 Official Score Certificate/Report of TOEIC, the Examinee Score Record of TOEFL, or Test Report Form of IELTS (Academic Module) score of the exam taken less than 2 years ago is valid. The certificate that you submit must be the valid and original official certificate delivered by post.
  5. 5 As for the schedule of the oral examination, please refer to the "Timetable of the oral examination” that will be sent by mail along with the Reference Card.

Enrollment

A list of successful applicants' number will be posted on the university website. A letter of acceptance will also be sent to successful applicants by registered mail. Later on, the enrollment procedure guidelines will be delivered to the successful applicants. As well as the enrollment to the university, registration at National Institute of Materials Sciences is required through your supervising professor.

Regardless of your educational background, applicants are required to submit English language proficiency score.

  • TOEIC Official Score Report/Certificate(important note : only Listening & Reading Test is valid)
  • TOEFL Examinee's Score Record
  • IELTS (Academic Module) Test Report Form

Important Notes

* Please arrange to send the results of TOEFL iBT and TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition to the university from ETS. The institution code is 9995, the department code is 99.

* TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS score from an examination taken after July 2019 is valid for August 2021 exam, and the score from an examination taken after January 2020 is valid for February 2022 exam

* TOEFL PBT, TOEFL CBT and TOEFL IBT are acceptable. However, TOEFL ITP (Institutional Test Program), TOEIC IP (Institutional Program) and IELTS (General Training Module) are not acceptable.

* The English proficiency certificate that you submit must be the valid and original official certificate delivered by post. You may be able to download the result in PDF format or see your result score on the website. However, the self-printed PDF certificate, a photocopy of the original certificate and a screencopy of the website are not accepted as original. (Although some institutes recognize the PDF certificate as original, University of Tsukuba does not.)

* If you have not taken TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS in the past, or your score is expired, consider taking the exam as soon as possible. Check out the exam date and the result dispatch date at your local TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS centre or on the website. Make sure that the score certificate is delivered to you before the application period.
