Masafumi Yoshio received his PhD from the University of Tokyo in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. Takashi Kato. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo from 2002 to 2011.
From 2008 to 2010, he worked as a Visiting Research Scientist at Columbia Univeristy, where he conducted research with Prof. Colin Nuckolls. He was subsequently
appointed Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo, serving from 2012 to 2017. In April 2017, he joined the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS)
as a Principal Research. He currently serves as Group Leader of the Molecular Mechatronics Group at NIMS, Guest Professor at Hokkaido University,
and a PRESTO Researcher at the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
He has received numerous awards, including the Young Scientist Award from the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society (2007), the Hitachi Kasei Award from the Society
of Polymer Science, Japan (2012), the Best Teaching Award from the University of Tokyo (2014), the Paper Award from the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society (2019),
the Mitsubishi Chemical Award from the Society of Polymer Science, Japan (2024), the NIMS President's Award (2024), the Paper Award from the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society (2024),
and the Achievement Award from the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society (2026).
