Research and Development Theme2:Advanced Lithium Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been improved drastically, with battery performance exceeding previous expectation. In addition, demands for battery performance become more and more for the realization of Society 5.0.

Based on current LIBs, NIMS, the University of Tokyo, and materials companies will work together to implement various new materials, such as structure-controlled separators, self-extinguishing electrolytes, lithium metal anodes, and high-capacity cathodes. This will achieve higher energy density, longer cycle life, and higher safety contributing to the research and development of advanced lithium batteries suitable for many applications.
Especially, we work closely with the protocol team for establish “protocol” by sharing various experimental data. We also work on research and development in a mutually complementary manner through making a prototype and evaluating test cells as a protocol verification target. By such collaboration, we would like to design and evaluate advanced lithium batteries that can bring out the properties of new materials.
