Research and Development Theme9:Advanced Battery Characterization

To maximize the energy density, the electrodes of rechargeable batteries are densely packed with active materials, conductive additives, and binders, forming complex 3D structures.
During charging and discharging, the active materials undergo electrochemical lithiation/delithiation reactions, which lead to changes in their composition, crystal structure and physical properties within the confined space.
These reactions further induce multiscale phenomena including expansion/contraction, stress concentration, and pulverization, which cause the mechanical degradation.

We are developing novel in situ/operando techniques to observe these dynamic processes and accelerate the development of high-performance materials and cell structures based on reaction mechanisms.
