Remote Access to High-Resolution Solid-State NMR System

We are pleased to announce that, with support from the Cabinet Office PRISM Program for Expanding Private and Public Sector R&D Investments, a new “remote operation” feature has been implemented in our high-resolution solid-state NMR instruments. NMR measurements typically require long continuous operation times, so remote and automated operation of the instruments is expected to be highly beneficial. In the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability to perform experiments remotely, minimizing travel and close contact, is especially valuable. We plan to make even greater use of our instruments with this new capability.

This system operates with two separate workstations: one dedicated to standard on-site measurements, and another for remote experiments. For routine measurements, the primary workstation is isolated from external networks to ensure security. For remote use, staff members invite users to the secondary workstation via the WebEX web conference system, and then grant control privileges to the users. This allows external users to directly operate the instrument from outside NIMS. While external users are operating the instrument, their activities are monitored in the laboratory. In case of any communication trouble during a measurement, the laboratory staff can immediately take over instrument control. For actual measurements, on-site staff handle sample loading and probe tuning; the user is responsible for the subsequent measurement process.
