Record High Proton Conduction in Grain Boundary Free Yttrium-Doped Barium Zirconate Films Grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition for Micro-Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

19 Sep, 2010

Grain-boundary free thin films of Yttrium-doped Barium Zirconate (BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ, BZY) were fabricated for the first time, showing the largest proton conductivity ever reported at 350℃ for any oxide material.

Figure 1. Literature data for BZY proton conductivity values measured in wet environments, compared with the measured conductivity of BZY films reported in this work. Literature data are taken from Fabbri E., Pergolesi D., Traversa E., Chemical Society Reviews, 2010, DOI:10.1039/b902343g.

Figure 2. Cross section FE-SEM micrograph of BZY films on MgO, (100)-oriented (left side); Comparison between the electrical conductivity values of the BZY film grown on MgO, and of BZY and BaCe0.8Y0.2O3-d (BCY) sintered pellets, measured in the intermediate temperature range. Conductivity values of the most performing oxygen ion conducting materials, La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3 (LSGM) and Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9-δ (GDC), are also reported.
