Joining as an Intern
The NIMS internship route is designed for currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who want a short, hands-on research stay at NIMS, typically for up to 90 days.
Depending on the call and your status, support may include a daily allowance and accommodation, but acceptance is competitive and not guaranteed.
How to Apply
- Select a host researcher from NIMS Staff who has a SAMURAI profile
- Email the researcher directly with CV attached. Intern applications proceed only through a host researcher at NIMS
- Agree on a 1 to 3 month research plan, then prepare the application form, proof of enrollment, and official transcript
- Allow time for internal screening, which may take around one month
A strong first email is usually brief: introduce your research interests, explain why the lab is a good fit, propose a concrete internship idea, and state your available dates.
Doing a Master/PhD
The most common doctoral route is the NIMS Graduate Program, where you enroll at a partner university, for example the University of Tsukuba, and carry out your thesis research at NIMS under a supervisor affiliated with both institutions.
Key Steps
- Email Dr. Sepehri-Amin as a potential supervisor first to confirm research fit and the most appropriate degree program
- Apply to the NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship
- Apply to the partner university according to its official entrance procedures and timeline
- Check language and examination requirements carefully, including TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC where relevant
For students committed to magnetism, magnetic materials, and advanced characterization or modeling, this pathway offers a strong research environment with direct access to NIMS facilities and collaborators.
Already Enrolled in a PhD Abroad?
If you are already a PhD student at an overseas partner institution, the International Cooperative Graduate Program (ICGP) can offer a medium-term stay at NIMS, typically for 6 to 12 months.
This route is generally coordinated through your home university during the annual application cycle and can include financial support, accommodation, and visa assistance.
