NC-AFM 2025 conference
The 26th International Conference on Non-contact Atomic Force Microscopy
Toyama (Japan), 4th to 8th August 2025

Programme

The oral programme will be announced on 19th June 2025. The final program will be on 16th July 2025. On the conference site, we will provide a brief summary of the program upon request (max 100). To save on paper waste and reduce environmental impact, we will not distribute printed abstract booklets. Please download the full PDF version (71 MB) prior to the conference.

Oral: Oral presentations are 20 minutes in length, consisting of 15 minutes for the talk and 5 minutes for questions and discussion. We will provide only the HDMI cable. If you require a converter, please bring your own. A widescreen format (16:9) is preferred but not mandatory.

Poster: We accept posters exclusively in portrait orientation, ideally sized at 90 ✕ 120 cm (width x height, A0). Please display your poster on the board corresponding to your number (poster map) before the start of Poster A session at 18:00 on Monday, 4th August, and remove it before the conference finishes at 13:00 on Friday, 8th August, after the Poster B session. The core time for your presentation can be found in the detailed program. Poster pins will be provided on site.

Best Poster Awards : We encourage students and young scientists to apply for the Best Poster Awards! A one-minute presentation for award candidates will be held, immediately before your poster session core time. Please submit your slide(s) in PDF format with a file name of e.g., P1_Name.pdf, to Dropbox by 1st August. The link will be announced to the candidates via email. Please note that presentations exceeding one minute may significantly lower your evaluation score. The winners will be announced during the conference dinner on Thursday, 7th August, and photos from the award ceremony will be published on this website.

Conference Publications: The Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology is publishing a new thematic issue ‘At the cutting edge of atomic force microscopy’. This is the ideal venue to publish papers related to the presentations at the conference. See here for more details.

Lunch: There are many restaurants for lunch near the conference site, and we will provide a short list of recommended options. The food court GURUNAVI FOOD HALL WYE 富山 (in Japanese) is avaialble in the next building. Additionally, there are numerous restaurants (in Japanese) in and around JR Toyama Station, ranging from casual eateries to more formal dining establishments, providing a wide selection of local and international cuisine.

Sponsor Seminar: Scienta Omicron will organize a Luncheon Seminar on 5th August. Since the number of participants has almost reached the expected limit, registration via Microsoft Forms is now closed. Scienta Omicron will send the detailed information to the registered participants soon. If you would like to participate, please contact to Mr. Fukushima (Yuuki.Fukushima=this was image=scientaomicron.com), immediately.

Welcome party: We will provide an opportunity to meet and reconnect with colleagues in our community, accompanied by refreshments and light snacks, on Sunday late afternoon. Please come to the registration desk on the ground (first) floor of the Middle Hall at Toyama Aubade Hall. We thank you for indicitaing your attendance on the registration page.

Excursion: As part of the conference activities, we are organizing an excursion on Thursday that will offer an excellent opportunity for in-person scientific discussions. We have planned three courses: a bus tour to Gokayama, a boat trip to the old town of Iwase, and a city walking tour. Participants will be taken to the conference dinner venue. We thank you for selecting your preferred excursion on the registration page. If you have not yet made a selection, please contact the organizer by email. Each course has a minimum and maximum number of participants. Thank you for your understanding.

Conference Dinner: Following the excursion, there will be a conference dinner at Grand Plaza (in Japanese). We can get there by tram and get off at Grand Plaza-mae. For those not participating in the excursion, please join us at the venue around 18:30.
Address: 3-chōme-6 Sōgawa, Toyama, 930-0083 (Google map link).

Satellite Workshop: Dynamic mode atomic force microscopy under ambient conditions
Atomic force microscopy operated under ambient conditions holds great potential, as it enables the investigation of a wide range of practical materials and devices. Recent advances in instrumentation—such as the integration of optical vibrational spectroscopy and torsional resonance techniques—have facilitated novel measurements in nanoscience. In this workshop, we focus on recent achievements in dynamic mode atomic force microscopy in air, aiming to bridge the gap between ultrahigh vacuum and liquid environments, and to broaden the scope of non-contact atomic force microscopy.

Excursion

We are planning three courses for the excursion. Since each course has a limited number of participants, we will contact participants regarding course selection on July 11th via email. If you wish to join a particular course, we recommend completing your registration by that date.

Course 1: Gokayama Tour (Ainokura Gassho-style Village)
Located in the southern part of Toyama Prefecture, about 60 km from Toyama City, enjoy a guided bus tour of Gokayama, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Famous for its traditional Gokayama Gassho Style houses, the region offers a rich cultural and historical experience through a guided walking tour. The tour also features a performance of “Kokiriko-bushi,” Japan’s oldest traditional folk song.

Course 2: Old town (Iwase town)
Located in the northern part of Toyama City, Iwase once thrived as a port of call for the Kitamae-bune cargo ships. Today, the historic charm remains vividly intact along Omachi Street (the old Hokkokukaido Road), where traditional merchant houses from that era still line the road. This tour takes you to Iwase by Fugan Suijo Line (cruise boat) one way and by tram the other. A highlight of the cruise is passing through the Nakajima Lock—a "water elevator" that adjusts a 2.5-meter difference in water levels between upstream and downstream. It is the first lock in Japan to be designated an Important Cultural Property as a civil engineering structure. After experiencing this unique lock by boat, you’ll arrive in Iwase to enjoy tastings of local sake and craft beer, along with a leisurely stroll through the historic townscape.

Course 3: City walking tour
Explore the heart of Toyama City, starting from the iconic Toyama Castle. This tour features cultural gems including the Toyama Glass Art Museum—highlighted in The New York Times—and a rare museum dedicated to Japanese swords, offering a unique journey into the beauty and depth of Japanese tradition.
