Artificial vision ionic device that mimics neurons in the retina using migration and interaction of ions (center), input image (left) and edge-enhanced output image (right)

An artificial vision ionic device that operates based on the movement of ions in a solid and the interaction between ions has been developed. The device has been demonstrated for the first time in the world to mimic the illusion of the human eye, in which the area around the boundary between light and dark is enhanced. The research results were published online in the American scientific journal Nano Letters on September 14, 2021 (Japan time). Furthermore, a related article appeared in the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun (print and electronic versions) on October 18, 2021.
