The importance of non-covalent interactions in the process of structure determination, on physical properties and on crystal engineering

Recent collaborative work with the Dr. J.P. Hill (NIMS) and Prof. T. Yamato (Saga) groups in Japan have highlighted the importance of hydrogen bonding and π···π interactions, not only for compound properties, but also the actual process of elucidating molecular structure. Examples will be described for (i) inorganic manganese complexes, (ii) organic, pure-blue, light emitting functionalised pyrenes, (iii) solvates of trimesic acid, and (iv) solvent effects on carboxylate/dimethylamino-pyridinium salt systems.

Speaker

Prof. Mark Elsegood, Department of Chemistry, Loughborough University, UK

Chair

Dr. Jonathan Hill, MANA Scientist, NIMS
