Environment around Tsukuba City

Tsukuba city has abundant nature including Mt. Tsukuba in the north side of the city, and well-established urban places as the largest national research center and education center. It covers 28,400 ha (112 square miles) including 2,700 ha of Tsukuba Science City.

The urban area is called as "City Center Zone" in which there are some commercial and communal facilities, for example, Tsukuba International Congress Center, Tsukuba Capio, Nova Hall, Tsukuba Museum of Art Ibaraki, Tsukuba Public Library, and so on.

Large company's research centers and public research institutes of ~300 exist in the city, and ~13,000 researchers including ~5,600 Ph.D degree holders work there. And many researchers and students from foreign countries also live in the city, and they give the city an international flavor.

Transportation in Tsukuba City


Main transportation is car and others are train and bus. Tsukuba Express (TX), which is a train connected Tsukuba City with Akihabara in 45 minutes, enables us to access the center of Tokyo very easily. The network of buses is well-developed to get to the neighbor cities such as Tsuchiura city and Ushiku city. Public buses "Tsuku-Bus", limited number of running, are managed by Tsukuba City of which fare is very low, and high-way bus to central area of Tokyo are also available.

Educational environments
The environment of education is pretty satisfactory since 5 elementary, 2 junior high and 4 high schools are located very close to NIMS. In the Christmas season, NIMS cooperates with Takezono-Nishi elementary school to make Christmas illumination. Some international schools are available for the children of foreign researchers.

University of Tsukuba
University of Tsukuba locates at the central area of Tsukuba City, which has 9 undergraduate courses and 14 graduate schools. NIMS manages one of the graduate schools, in which course some MANA principal investigators become professors. They can accept students in their laboratory.


Public institutions
Most of public institutions are located in the "City Center Zone". The city government is located in Yatabe Region which is a little far from the Center, but the branch government office in Sakura Region is available near the center. Museum of Arts and Public Library are located in City Center Zone.

Parks
Many parks with luxurious nature exist in Tsukuba City.
"Doho" park is the largest park including vast large plaza, grove, marsh, field athletics, and good facilities of gymnasium, heated indoor pool, tennis courts, which is very familiar and highly used by many families through year. Tsukuba Park's street called as 5km Pedestrian connects seven parks of Matsumi, Chuo, Ohshimizu, Takezono, Ninomiya, Doho, and Akatsuka.
This pedestrian is popular as pretty nice cycling road.

Research institutes
Tsukuba City has many research institutes and facilities including NIMS. "Tsukuba Expo Center" runs very comprehensible exhibitions related to Space Developments, Oceanic developments, nuclear power developments and general science. In addition, one can enjoy one of the largest planetarium in the world. Some institutes including NIMS and JAXA are very familiar through open institute's events and science festival.

Medical welfare
The medical welfare of Tsukuba City is well established, starting with University hospital, many private hospitals around the "City Center Zone" can be available.

Stores / Shops
There are various kinds of stores in the city center zone and the circumference, for example, restaurants, clothing stores, food markets, electric stores, pharmacies, CD and Video shops, Discount stores, second hands shops, etc. Some stores are so famous as to be visited by customers outside the prefecture. We can use several commercial complexes, which are not only convenient but also very entertaining so that they are crowded with many families at holiday.

Amusement spot
Amakubo area is an amusement spot including transnational restaurants and Karaoke shops.

Mt. Tsukuba


Mt. Tsukuba, called as "Shi-ho", is 877 m in height locates at the north side of Tsukuba City and has double crests, "Nyotai-san" on west side and "Nantai-san" on east side. With its beautiful shape, the mountain is so famous in Japan as to be written in "Manyo-shu", the oldest collection of Japanese poems. It is compared to Mt. Fuji; "Mt.Fuji in the west, and Mt. Tsukuba in the east. Mountain hikers have increased, since the TX is available. It's possible to reach the top of the mountain by using cable car, ropeway and the climbing mountain road.
