Overview

The role of Tadaaki Nagao in NIMS is to develop optical nanomaterials and devices for the application in sensing, energy harvesting from solar light and infrared thermal radiation. He run projects on wavelength-selective thermal radiation/absorption and their applications as principal investigator initiated by JST PRESTO and then CREST program and JSPS Kakenhi Kiban S program. Now running projects with several industrial collaborator as well as JAXA. He received his doctor degree in physics from Waseda University (Tokyo Japan) on electron energy loss spectroscopy and surface phonons of boron compounds. As an assistant professor at the physics department at the University of Tokyo (1994) and an associate professor at the Institute for Materials Research (IMR) at Tohoku University (2001) he established his research on the optoelectronics, spintronics, and photothermal properties of metallic nanostructures and their application in vibrational IR sensing and solar energy harvesting and heat blocking. From 2010 he is a Group Leader of National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and he runs his materials science project on solar photocatalysis, surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopy, passive IR sensing, as well as light/heat and light/electricity conversion phenomena in metal and ceramic films and nanostructures. He was awarded as a fellow of the Institute of Physics (United Kingdom) in 2011, and currently also serving as a professor in physics course at Hokkaido University and hosts PhD students. During his student days, he was actively involved in rowing and cycling. He lived in Mexico City as a child, but speaks only a few words of Spanish. He is originally from Osaka and have also lived in Kokura, Sendai, Boston, and Hannover.
