Program Outlines

collaboration between Waseda University and NIMS

In December 2008, collaboration between Waseda University professors and assigned researchers from National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) started in postgraduate education in Department of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Waseda University.

In September 2019, the collaborative program was installed in the new department, Department of Materials Science, Graduate School of Fundamental Science and Engineering.

By the extension of the graduate program structure, the collaboration contributes the educational environment for postgraduate students who aspire to a career as researchers in materials science.

Support for the graduate students

One of the features of this program is that you can obtain support from both NIMS and Waseda University in various situations. We encourage the students to pursue their degrees while taking advantage of the research environment, student life, and financial support system.

NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship
NIMS offers the the assistantship to the graduate students who aspire to a career as researchers in materials science. Those who are selected as NIMS Junior Researchers are offered a monthly stipend for to support to fulfill their academic goals. Going through the screening prior to the university application is required.

Scholarships
Through the university, you can find various types of scholarships offered by governments, private institutions and Waseda University. The information can be found on the faculty website, while some are only informed on the university system for the enrolled students.

Career development and guidance
The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers opportunities for job hunting and career guidance. The students can access the Career Center to reach out for the services and support.

Department of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering,
the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering

The department focuses on research in the fields of new ceramics, inorganic materials, semiconductors, biomaterials, polymer materials, and metallic crystal. With Waseda University's Global Centre-of-Excellence (COE) environment, students are able to enjoy the cross-disciplinary research field.

Department of Materials Science,
Graduate School of Fundamental Science and Engineering

The department takes up the challenge of elucidating the principles of materials science. The basis is required for developments in heavy, automotive, electronics, infrastructure and medical industries, in addition to materials industries such as steel, non-ferrous metals and raw materials.
Combining with mathematical perspective, the department aims to develop individuals who have the ability to think deeply and imaginatively about modern science and technology, as well as the fundamental principles.
