NIMS Award Symposium

November 14th, 2022 [Mon.] 10:00-17:50

Language: Japanese and English (Simultaneous interpretation available)

“ Biomaterials for Well-being ”Biomaterials that enabled innovative advances in medical technology

With the proportion of the elderly population in Japan approaching 30%, the development of biomaterials to support the next generation of healthcare has become one of the most important research issues of our time. Moreover, we have now entered an era of renewed interest in medical technology due to the devastation caused by the new coronavirus that has spread globally since the beginning of 2020. These medical technologies include pharmaceuticals and medical devices that focus on "materials," reaffirming the importance of biomaterial research in supporting healthcare.

NIMS is pleased to present the 2022 NIMS AWARD to three biomaterials researchers who have revolutionized the medical or biotechnological fields worldwide: Dr. Teruo Okano, founder of cell sheet engineering, Dr. Kazuhiko Ishihara, developer of MPC polymer, and Dr. Donald E. Ingber, proponent of the cellular tensegrity model.

In the Award Winning-lectures, each will present how their respective material innovation was born and how it has changed medicine worldwide. Following the award lecture, leading researchers in the field of biomaterials will present their current challenges and future prospects with an introduction of the latest biomaterials research.

Everyone is welcome to participate in NIMS AWARD Winning-lectures and Symposium. All lectures will be presented in both Japanese and English through simultaneous interpretation and are intended for participants with various backgrounds in science and engineering.
