Dr. Ming-Zhe bian, a post doc researcher, and Dr. Taisuke Sasaki have developed a bake hardenable magnesium alloy sheet that can be formed at room temperature. The paper entitled "A heat-treatable Mg–Al–Ca–Mn–Zn sheet alloy with good room temperature formability" was published on-line in Scripta Materialia on June 16, 2017.
Unlike conventional magnesium alloy, the newly developed magnesium sheet alloy, AXMZ1000, shows excellent formability at room temperature. The specific strength is 1.5 times larger than that of medium strength aluminum alloys. The newly developed alloy is promising as lightest structural materials for automotive, notebook PC and cell phone applications to reduce their weights.
