The 6th International Workshop on Smart Biomaterials

Scope
On behalf of the organizing committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the International Symposium on Smart Biomaterials at National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba, Japan on September 9, 2019. The Symposium will be including all topics related “smart biomaterials” such as therapeutic treatments, diagnostics/imaging, and related basic sciences, being focused on the development of new biomaterials. This symposium is also a follow-up to the International Symposium on Smart Biomaterials, which have been held at NIMS in 2010 and 2014, Korea in 2015, Taiwan in 2016, and China in 2017. We will invite Emeritus Prof. Allan S. Hoffman from University of Washington, who has been one of the pioneers and world’s leading scientists in biomaterials science for many years, with numerous experimental studies in the application of polymers in medicine in particular. We will also invite Prof. Patrick Stayton who is a director of Molecular Engineering & Sciences at University of Washington, Prof.In-Kyu Park from Chonnam National University Medical School in Korea. Many other presentations in the symposium are of course made by a wide variety of speakers, including invited speakers from US, Korea, Japan and other countries. We hope all participants in this symposium will obtain fresh inspiration from the lectures.
Finally, the goal of research at MANA is based on our conviction that materials are the mother of science and technology. To meet the demand, MANA is attempting to open a new paradigm of materials development based on a new technology system named “Materials Nanoarchitectonics”, where nanoscale structural units are arranged in a desired configuration with their interactions controlled to create a novel functionality. Therefore, we hope that the combination of accumulated knowledge and experiences will result in development of a new type of smart biomaterials based on the materials nanoarchitectonics.
