NIMS-University of Hokkaido
Joint Graduate School

The long-term relationship between Hokkaido University and the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) was formalized with a comprehensive collaborative agreement, signed in 2004. Over the last decade, the two institutions have been engaged in various interactive activities, particularly in a joint graduate program.

By the establishment of the joint graduate program in 2008, 12 laboratories conduct doctoral education and research in the fields of Advanced Functional Chemistry, Frontier Biomaterials Science, and Advanced Functional Materials Physics. Selected NIMS researchers have been assigned as the university faculty members to supervise the students on their research and thesis. As of April 2018, 35 graduates have themselves become researchers and academicians.
