International Workshop on Strengthening of Magnesium Alloys by Application of Quasicrystal and Related Phases

June 10-11, 2010,
at NIMS (National Institute for Materials Science),
Tsukuba, Japan

see the PROGRAM here

This workshop will focus on the problems in strengthening of magnesium alloys and how they can be solved by using quasicrystal phase. Experts in the area of magnesium alloys and its development will talk about the fundamentals of strengthening in these alloys and the application of quasicrystals and related phases to it. Exciting new developments will be covered.

This Workshop will be organized just before the 11th International Conference on Quasicrystals (ICQ11) to be held at Sapporo, Japan, from 13 to 18 June, 2010. Tsukuba is about 1 hour from Tokyo by highway bus or train (Tsukuba Express). Tsukuba is also about 1:40 hours by bus from the Narita International Airport.

Lectures by specialists will cover the fundamentals of deformation of magnesium alloys (slip systems, twinning, texture, anisotropy, etc.), issues in strengthening and possible solutions, effect of deformation on strength, quasicrystal alloys systems, effect of quasicrystals on deformation of magnesium alloys, strength and ductility, modification of texture, enhancement of fracture toughness and processes to tailor the microstructures.
