Reason for Award

Dr. Fujita was awarded for his outstanding international leadership in scanning probe microscopy as a VAMAS pre-standardization international collaboration and his pioneering work in data workflows, methods, and best practices. Since leading the scanning probe microscopy (SPM) project at VAMAS/TWA2 (Surface Chemical Analysis) in 2011 and becoming a leader in the SPM field, which was established in 2013, he has been contributing to the SPM becoming the largest topic within the field of surface chemical analysis. Under his leadership and enthusiasm, several projects related to the SPM metrology and nanoscale material characterization have been ongoing or completed, and have contributed to the advancement of science and technology by being published as international standards in ISO. Since 2018, he has also played a leading role in addressing the rapidly increasing importance of data in surface chemical analysis, including data accessibility (e.g. FAIR principles) and data analysis acceleration.

About VAMAS

The Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) is an international research cooperation project agreed at the G7 Summit in Versailles in 1982 and the EC European Commission (now the EU European Commission). The main objective of VAMAS is to provide a technical basis for harmonized measurement methods and to promote global trade through innovation and practical application of advanced materials through international cooperation leading to best practices and standards. NIMS coordinates VAMAS Japan as the core organization for advanced materials research. VAMAS Japan is working with VAMAS to promote international exchange with other countries and to propose Japanese-led standards and international standardization based on research results with domestic and foreign research institutions.
