Abstract:
This paper explores the environmental degradation of nickel-based superalloys at high temperatures and proposes protective coating strategies to mitigate oxidation and hot corrosion.
It will be shown that W and Mo induce acidic hot corrosion leading to extensive attacks in equiaxed Rene77 and directionally solidified DS200. In low cost single crystal AM1 superalloy, the microstructure (as-cast vs. fully heat treated) plays a significant role whereas in advanced Pt-containing TROPEA single crystal, Pt is shown to act as catalyst for sulfidation.
In this view, conventional out-of-pack aluminide coatings are shown to protect against corrosion while the positive protective effects are far more marked in Simodified slurry aluminide coatings.
