Abstract:
Manufacturing and heat treatment shape the nanoscale features that give Ni-based superalloys their high-temperature strength. This seminar explores how forging and additive manufacturing can control precipitation and interfacial chemistry, linking processing history to mechanical performance. In industrially forged IN718, deformation influences the size, volume fraction, and configuration of strengthening precipitates formed during direct ageing, which omits the conventional solution treatment. In René 65, heat treatment reduces microstructural and hardness variations across a billet. Examples from laser and electron beam powder bed fusion reveal how build conditions and thermal treatments govern phase evolution and solute segregation in IN718 and IN738.
Atom probe tomography, electron microscopy and mechanical testing are combined to connect nanoscale observations with processing routes. The findings show how the defects and thermal histories created during manufacturing can be used to tailor microstructure and improve the performance of high-temperature alloys used in aeroengine components.
