Prof. Tadashi Furuhara Appointed as NIMS Fellow — Concurrent Appointment at ICYS and RCSM —

As of April 1, 2026, Professor Tadashi Furuhara, after his retirement from the Institute for Materials Research of Tohoku University, has been appointed as a Fellow of the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS).

In addition to this appointment, Furuhara will concurrently serve as Acting Director of the International Center for Young Scientists (ICYS) and hold an appointment at the Research Center for Structural Materials (RCSM) at NIMS.

His research focuses on the microstructural control of structural metallic materials, particularly on the fundamental mechanisms governing microstructure formation through phase transformations, precipitation, and recrystallization, from thermodynamic, kinetic and crystallographic perspectives.

At NIMS, he will advance research on microstructure formation and mechanical properties of metallic materials such as steels and titanium alloys, while also contributing to the overall development of research activities at the Center.

Prof. Tadashi Furuhara

I am deeply honored to serve as a NIMS Fellow. The necessity of structural materials in building a sustainable society is undeniable, and the role of the Structural Materials Research Center is more important than ever. I hope to contribute, even in a small way, to the advancement of materials research and the development of young researchers. I would appreciate your cooperation.
